How to care for pearls
Thank you very much for choosing IRIS・SPIRA and Bis・SPIRA pearl products.
Pearls are organic gemstones created by mollusks. While they require different care than hard stones, it is not difficult. Simply follow the instructions provided here to maintain their luster for a long time.
The most important thing
After wearing, please gently wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Sweat and sebum will gradually dull the luster of the pearls. This single habit can significantly extend the life of your pearls.
When wearing
- Put on your pearls last. Please keep perfumes, cosmetics, hair products, and sunscreen from coming into contact with your pearls. It is safest to put them on last, only after you have finished all your preparations.
- After summer days or exercise, remove and wipe them as soon as possible. Sweat is the enemy of pearls.
- Remove them for baths, hot springs, and swimming pools. Hot water, chlorine, and hot spring minerals can damage the pearl layers.
When storing
- Keep them separate from other jewelry and metal accessories. Pearls are easily scratched and their surfaces can be worn down if they rub against hard stones or metals. Store them individually in the case provided or wrapped in a soft cloth.
- Store in a low-humidity place, but avoid extreme dryness. Keeping them in an airtight container for a long period can cause cracks due to dryness.
- Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures. Do not leave them by windows or inside vehicles.
- Do not keep them tucked away. Wearing and wiping them occasionally is the best care you can give your pearls.
Things to avoid
- Do not use ultrasonic cleaners, bleach, or abrasive cleaners. These will damage the pearl layers.
- Washing with water, alcohol, or detergents is also unnecessary. If you are concerned about dirt, wipe with a cloth tightly wrung out in lukewarm water, then immediately remove the moisture with a dry cloth.
Regarding hardware and silver
- SV925 (sterling silver) will gradually tarnish when exposed to air. Please polish only the metal parts using a silver polishing cloth, being careful not to touch the pearls. Do not use liquid silver cleaners, as they will cause the pearls to deteriorate if they come into contact.
- You can keep earring hardware clean by wiping it with a dry cloth before putting it on.
Regarding the necklace string
For our strand necklaces, we use a white vinyl-coated wire instead of standard silk thread. It is resistant to stretching and breaking; under normal usage, there is no need to re-string for about five years. Please consult with us if you see gaps appearing between the pearls or if the wire becomes kinked.
If you have any concerns
Whether the luster has dulled, the hardware has become loose, or you are worried about the wire—no matter how small the issue, please contact us at the address below. We are here to help you enjoy your pearls for a long time.
